The Mouse and Windows

When you log in, you will be running OpenWindows, which is a version of X-windows. If you are familiar with using a mouse on a PC or MacIntosh, you will see many similarities, and a few differences, between what you are familiar with and OpenWindows.

Use the mouse to move the arrow around. The left-hand button on the mouse is used to select windows and to drag windows around. You must click on a window before you type text to it. To select or drag a window, click on the title bar. To resize a window, drag the lower right hand corner. Use the left-hand button to select text in a window, by holding it down while moving over the text. Pressing the copy button copies the selected text to the clipboard. Pressing the paste button copies the clipboard to the location of the cursor, which can be in any window.

The right-hand button is used to bring up menus. Try pressing the right-hand button while the arrow is on the background behind the windows. You will get a menu offering to start utilities for you. To logout, select exit from this menu. If you press the right-hand button on the title bar of a window, you will get window-control functions, such as quit.

The middle button is not used very often. It can be used to drag scroll bars to a desired position in a window with a lot of text.
