Starting the NoMachine Client (NX)

To log into xlogin using NX version 5, do the following.

  1. Start the NX client.

  2. Press continue.

  3. Select new. Press continue.

  4. Enter host xlogin.cs.ecu.edu. Leave the port set to 4000. Press continue enough times to reach the screen asking you to enter a name.

  5. Type a name for this. It can be anything. You might find a shorter name, such as xlogin, easy. Press done.

  6. Select a box for the name that you just created, and press connect.

  7. If you get a question about the authenticity of the host, answer yes, accept the host as authentic.

  8. Fill in the login boxes and press ok. Use your pirate id and password.

  9. Select create a new virtual desktop and press continue.

  10. Press ok enough times to get to the desktop. You should see a green chameleon sitting on a spiral branch.

  11. You can start a terminal by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting open terminal here. The terminal will start in the Desktop directory. command

      cd
    
    will take the terminal to your home directory. Doing open terminal here on a file manager window will open the terminal in that directory.

  12. You can start a text editor (gedit) by clicking on the OpenSUSE button at the lower left of the screen and selecting accessories/gedit.

  13. To log out, select the OpenSUSE menu and select log out.

    If you press the X at the upper right, you will suspend your session. You can reenter your session by looking for it on the start page. You can also do that if your session is cut off for some reason.

    Avoid creating new sessions while you have an existing session running. If you have a few running sessions, you will no longer be able to create a new session.

  14. You can find a hidden feature inserted by NX by putting the mouse at the top of the up-arrow at the top of the scroll bar. The page will appear to fold down. If you click on that, you will be taken to a screen that describes how to use the NX interface.
