Logging into Xlogin using the NoMachine client

Logging into Xlogin using the NoMachine client

You will need to get the NX client, version 4.

Start the client. There will be an initial page that is of no interest. Click "do not show this page again" and then continue to the next page.

See here for instructions (in MS Word) for logging. Unfortunately, the instructions are not quite correct. The screen shots might help. Here is the procedure.

Before you log in, you need to create a login template.

  1. Select New.
  2. Select protocol SSH in the drop-down box. Press Continue
  3. Type the host name xlogin.cs.ecu.edu. Set the port to 22. Press Continue.
  4. Select Use the NoMachine login. Press Continue.
  5. Select Don't use proxy. Press Continue.
  6. Choose a name for this template. Press Done.
Your template will show up in the screen. You do not need to create the template again when you login again.
  1. Select the template and select Connect.
  2. Log in using your Pirate id and password.
  3. Select New desktop.
  4. Select Create a new SUSE virtual desktop. Press Continue.
  5. Select OK until your desktop shows up.

To get a terminal, right-click on the background (or an open folder) and select Open terminal here. I recommend the Gnome Terminal. To open a simple text editor, type

  gedit&
in a terminal window.

The OpenSUSE button on the lower-left corner of the screeen provides some tools. Use that button to logout.
